Herd Behavior and Aggregate Uctuations in Nancial Markets 1

چکیده
We present a simple model of a stock market where a random communication structure between agents generically gives rise to a heavy tails in the distribution of stock price variations in the form of an exponentially truncated power-law, similar to distributions observed in recent empirical studies of high frequency market data. Our model provides a link between two well-known market phenomena: the heavy tails observed in the distribution of stock market returns on one hand and 'herding' behavior in nancial markets on the other hand. In particular, our study suggests a relation between the excess kurtosis observed in asset returns, the market order ow and the tendency of market participants to imitate each other.

Econophysics: nancial time series from a statistical physics point of view
In recent years, physicists have started applying concepts and methods of statistical physics to study economic problems. The word “Econophysics” is sometimes used to refer to this work. Much recent work is focused on understanding the statistical properties of nancial time series. One reason for this interest is that nancial markets are examples of complex interacting systems for which a huge ...
متن کاملEstimating Herd Behavior in Financial Markets: A Structural Approach
We estimate a structural model of herd behavior in nancial markets. A sequence of traders exchanges an asset with a market maker. Trade occurs over many days. Herd behavior can arise despite the fact that the price is e¢ ciently set by the market maker. The price is updated too slowly by the market maker and there are periods in which traders choose the same action independently of their priva...
متن کاملDo Behavioral Biases Adversely A¤ect theMacro-Economy?
This study investigates whether the adverse e¤ects of investorsbehavioral biases extend beyond the domain of nancial markets to the broad macro-economy. We focus on the risk sharing (or income smoothing) role of nancial markets and demonstrate that risk sharing levels are higher in U.S. states in which investors have higher cognitive abilities and exhibit weaker behavioral biases. Further, s...

We examine the role of macroeconomic uctuations, asset market liquidity, and network structure in determining contagion and aggregate losses in a nancial system. Systemic instability is explored in a nancial network comprising three distinct, but interconnected, sets of agents domestic banks, international nancial institutions, and rms. Calibrating the model to advanced country banking s...
متن کاملAn examination of herd behavior in equity markets: An international perspective
We examine the investment behavior of market participants within dierent international markets (i.e., US, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan), speci®cally with regard to their tendency to exhibit herd behavior. We ®nd no evidence of herding on the part of market participants in the US and Hong Kong and partial evidence of herding in Japan. However, for South Korea and Taiwan, the two em...
